Waipi'o Valley is found along the Hamakua Coast on the northeast shore of the
Big Island. Waipi'o means curved water for the the Waipi'o River that winds
through the valley until it merges with the sea at a magnificent black sand
beach.
This "Valley of the Kings" was home to many of the rulers of Hawai'i, the site
of important heiaus (sacred temples), ancient burial caves and was also a place
of refuge.
The mana (spiritual power) of ancient (ali'i) royalty is believed to watch over
the valley. It is the southernmost and the largest of the seven valleys on the
windward side of the Kohala Mountains.
This tour allows a unique view of the Valley to unfold before your eyes.
Knowledgeable guides provide history of Hi'ilawe Falls and the old sugar cane
plantations, tales of Hawaiian folklore and background on the local flora and
fauna.
The guides are more than helpful in capturing these breathtaking moments of your
group at the private lookout sites. These relaxed horseback tours offer a blend
of the "paniolo" (Hawaiian Cowboy) life and exclusive sightseeing along the
Waipio Valley Rim. |
